How to understand casino bonus terms
A practical guide to wagering requirements, expiry dates, game contribution, maximum cashout and withdrawal rules.
Illustrative editorial artwork, not a screenshot of a real operator interface.
A €500 bonus may look more attractive than 50 free spins. The headline figure does not tell you what you must do to receive or withdraw it. Check the wagering requirement, eligible games, expiry date and rules for withdrawing before completing the bonus.
The important details are not always shown beside the advertised amount. Read the full promotion terms before opting in or depositing. This guide explains common terms; it does not describe a current Nomini offer. The rules of the specific promotion and the relevant country always take priority.
Start with these details
| Check | What to find out |
|---|---|
| Wagering basis | Is the multiplier applied to the bonus or deposit plus bonus? |
| Game contribution | Which games count fully, partially or not at all? |
| Deadlines | When must you activate the offer and complete wagering? |
| Maximum stake | Is there a per-round stake cap while the bonus is active? |
| Withdrawals | Are winnings capped or subject to extra conditions? |
| Max Cashout | What is the maximum amount payable from the promotion? |
| Deposit | What is the minimum deposit and which payment methods qualify? |
| Verification | What identity or payment documents may be required, and when? |
A missing detail does not mean there is no restriction. Check the full terms. If an important rule remains unclear, ask the operator before depositing—or do not accept the offer.
Wagering requirements: what does 30x mean?
The multiplier alone does not show how much you need to wager. The calculation base matters.
If you receive €100 bonus funds and the requirement is 30x the bonus:
€100 × 30 = €3,000 in wagering.
If the deposit and bonus are both included—for example, a €100 deposit plus a €100 bonus—the calculation becomes:
(€100 + €100) × 30 = €6,000.
The wording can double the required wagering. Look for an explicit statement of whether the multiplier applies to the bonus only or to the combined deposit and bonus.
You may see the terms “wagering requirement”, “wagering”, or “playthrough”. They refer to the amount of eligible stakes that must be placed. Also check how much each game contributes.
Game contribution: what do 100%, 20% and 0% mean?
Game contribution tells you how much of a stake counts towards the wagering target. At 100%, a €10 stake adds €10. At 20%, it adds €2. At 0%, it adds nothing.
| Game category | Illustrative examples only | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Slots | 100% | A €10 stake adds €10 to wagering. |
| Table games | around 5–20% | A €10 stake adds €0.50–€2. |
| Live casino | sometimes 0% | Stakes may be excluded entirely. |
These are examples, not legal requirements or a reliable market-wide standard. Individual games may be excluded, and each promotion can use different rates. The current contribution table in the offer terms is the only reliable reference.
Deadlines, promo codes and activation
Several deadlines may apply: the time to accept the offer, make a qualifying deposit, complete wagering or use free spins. Check when each period starts—at registration, activation, deposit or bonus credit.
A promo code may need to be entered during registration, before depositing or in the promotions area. Some offers require an explicit opt-in instead. If a required code is entered too late, or the opt-in is missed, the deposit may not qualify. A later correction is not guaranteed. Check the steps before paying in.
Maximum stakes and excluded games
Bonus terms may set a maximum stake per round. It can be lower than the maximum allowed by the game itself. Check whether the limit also applies to free spins or bonus features.
In Germany’s regulated market, the general maximum stake for virtual slot games is €1 per round. Since 1 July 2026, a step-by-step increase is possible: first to up to €3 and, at a second stage, to up to €5. The operator must hold the relevant GGL permission. A stake of up to €3 is available only to players aged 21 or over. The second stage, from €3 to €5, additionally requires at least 90 days of play without indicators of problematic behaviour and special operator monitoring. Players have no entitlement to a higher limit; the operator decides whether to offer and grant it. The deviation from the standard limit is currently time-limited until 31 December 2027. A promotion may still set a lower bonus stake cap. Check the GGL guidance and the licensed operator’s terms.
Some games may not contribute to wagering. If a player breaches a promotion rule, possible consequences—depending on the wording and circumstances—can include cancellation of the bonus or related winnings. Suspected manipulation may lead to further checks or account action. These are possible outcomes, not automatic consequences of every mistake.
Bonus funds, Max Cashout and early withdrawals
Bonus funds are not automatically withdrawable cash. Wagering conditions may need to be completed first. Also look for a maximum cashout clause.
Max Cashout means the promotion sets a ceiling on the amount that can be paid out. For example, if a bonus has a €100 maximum cashout and you win €500 with it, no more than €100 may be payable if the clause caps those winnings. The terms should explain what happens to the remaining amount.
Requesting a withdrawal before wagering is complete may cancel the bonus and winnings linked to it. Some operators allow a cash withdrawal only if you give up the bonus. Rules differ, so read the cancellation and withdrawal clauses before submitting a request.
Minimum deposit and payment methods
A promotion may require a minimum deposit. It may also exclude certain payment methods. A method available for ordinary deposits is not necessarily eligible for a bonus. Check both points before depositing.
In Germany’s regulated market, deposits and withdrawals must use a payment account held in the player’s name; anonymous payment methods are excluded. There is also a general cross-operator deposit limit of €1,000 per calendar month for online gambling. An increase may be permitted in specific cases subject to additional requirements. This statutory limit is separate from a promotion’s minimum deposit.
Multiple bonuses and identity checks
Not every operator allows more than one active bonus. Accepting a new promotion may make you ineligible for another or end an existing bonus. Read the combination rules before opting in again.
KYC means “Know Your Customer”. In Germany’s regulated online gambling market, identity checks take place before play. Further evidence about identity or payment details may be requested in some cases. Submit documents only through the operator’s official secure channels and resolve outstanding checks early.
Bonus advertising and safer gambling in Germany
Advertising for permitted gambling in Germany is subject to the Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021. The GGL explains that bonus advertising should make the eligible audience, occasion, duration and value of the benefit clear. Advertising must not create inappropriate time pressure or downplay risks. The GGL FAQ is guidance, not a binding decision on an individual case.
Set a budget before you consider a promotion. Do not increase it to meet a wagering target, and do not chase losses.
The Federal Institute of Public Health (BIÖG, formerly BZgA) runs a free and anonymous gambling helpline on 0800 1 37 27 00. It is open Monday to Thursday, 10:00–22:00, and Friday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00, on 363 days a year (closed on 24 and 31 December). People who want to exclude themselves can apply for self-exclusion through OASIS, Germany’s nationwide gambling blocking system. A self-exclusion normally lasts one year; a shorter individual period can be requested, but it cannot be less than three months. It does not end automatically: an application to lift the block is required after the minimum period. OASIS is a blocking system, not a counselling service.

Frequently asked questions
Does a €100 bonus mean I can withdraw €100?
No. Bonus funds may be subject to wagering, expiry and withdrawal conditions.
What does 30x wagering mean?
A specified amount must be wagered 30 times. The terms must say whether that amount is the bonus alone or deposit plus bonus.
Do all games count equally?
No. Contribution depends on the promotion and the games listed in its terms.
What is Max Cashout?
It is a cap on the amount payable from a promotion. If the cap is €100, no more than €100 of a €500 bonus-related win may be paid where the clause applies to that win.
Can I withdraw before completing wagering?
That may cancel the bonus and related winnings. Check the withdrawal rules first.
Can I use more than one bonus?
Not always. Some promotions cannot be combined or allow only one active bonus.
Where can I get help with gambling problems?
BIÖG lists counselling services, while OASIS provides self-exclusion in Germany’s regulated market.
